Private-Label French Wine for the USA: Find the Right Production Partner

Private-label wine can create differentiation for US retailers, hospitality groups and import portfolios. The sourcing decision is broader than designing a label: it involves production capability, product consistency, intellectual property and a compliant route to market.

Decide what ‘private label’ means for your program

There are several distinct models: a selected existing cuvée with customized presentation, a wine blended to an agreed specification, or a longer-term dedicated bottling program. The first may accelerate trial orders, while the latter can support a distinctive brand identity. Each model requires different work on formulation, inventory, ownership and labeling.

Write down who will own the US trademark, artwork, bottle molds if any, digital assets and producer-facing product brief. Clarify which parts can be reused and what happens to unused labels or bottles if the relationship ends.

Five capabilities to verify before choosing a supplier

  • Product control: sensory target, vintage changes and approval sample process.
  • Bottling flexibility: formats, closure options, order scheduling and packaging lead times.
  • Traceability: batch identification, certificates and documented origin claims.
  • Export coordination: technical documentation and responsiveness to US label requests.
  • Commercial resilience: reorder terms, shortage contingencies and quality claims procedure.

A producer's ability to customize presentation does not demonstrate that it can manufacture every proposed specification. Ask what is physically feasible and which changes trigger extra costs.

Build the label process around US approval

For many imported wines containing at least 7% alcohol by volume in retail containers, the US importer needs a TTB Certificate of Label Approval (COLA) before commercial release from customs. Label content, the imported-by statement and health warnings require careful review. Certain products also have formula or certification considerations. Do not print a large run of back labels before the importer has confirmed the compliance route.

Use the official TTB imported-wine label guide. The import compliance checklist gives the buyer-side sequence. State alcohol category and strength early; the applicable rules are not identical for every beverage.

Make exclusivity measurable

Exclusivity should define territory, products, effective date, sales thresholds, review periods, permitted channels and ownership of remaining inventory. ‘Exclusive in the USA’ is much broader than exclusivity for selected SKUs in a particular state. A supplier may already have a pre-existing distribution relationship, so request written confirmation before promising national exclusivity to retailers.

Include a defined sample acceptance standard, escalation contacts and remedies for a material deviation in product specification. Arrange independent legal review of trademark and distribution agreements when material commitments are at stake.

Position an Occitanie private-label offer

A credible positioning brief connects taste profile, occasion, price architecture and the intended buyer. An accessible Languedoc red for independent retail has a different brief from a limited-estate Roussillon release for specialist accounts. Avoid invented ‘award-winning’ claims, unverifiable organic labels or unlicensed appellation references. Authentic producer background and approved technical details are more effective long-term than generic marketing superlatives.

Send the supplier a concise RFQ describing your expected scale, customization, brand ownership and launch timeline. WINE ELSE can serve as a sourcing starting point; no specific production capacity or minimum is promised without supplier confirmation.

Frequently asked questions

Does private label mean buying anonymous bulk wine?

No. Private-label arrangements may range from a producer's existing bottled cuvée with approved custom presentation to dedicated production. Confirm the model in writing.

Who applies for US label approval?

The responsible US importer generally handles applicable TTB COLA applications for covered imported wines.

Can a supplier promise nationwide exclusivity?

Only if it has the rights to do so and the territory and channels are clearly contracted; state distribution requirements still apply.
